Churches and Weddings Series ( St. John Bosco Parish Church)

February 2nd, 2010 | by upto6only |

I somehow started to like taking photos of the churches.  2 weeks ago, my friend and I joined my friend, friend for a Visita Iglesia around Makati, Taguig and Pasay.  After the tour, i started looking for churches within Bulacan, Pampanga, Laguna, Manila and Cavite which i can visit and take photos.  So you will find from time to time posting of the different churches and activities performed here in my blog.  I find it beautiful to see how our churches have been constructed especially the altars.

Our first church was the St John Bosco Parish Church or Don Bosco Church.

St. John Bosco Parish

It was in March 1976 when His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin, Archbishop of Manila saw the need of establishing a new parish for the zealous villagers of San Lorenzo, Salcedo, Legaspi and the residents of Dulo in Barangay Pio del Pilar. Before then, their spiritual needs were met through the St. Ildefonso Parish, the first Salesian parish in Makati with Fr. John Rizzato as pastor. St. John Bosco Parish was founded on March 2, 1976 with Fr. Godfrey Roozen, SDB as its first parish priest. Fr. Roozen, guided by the mission of the parish patron saint, St. John Bosco – The Father and Teacher of the Youth, .untiringly organized the parish to grow from the small community of mass-goers in the chapel next to the Don Bosco Technical Institute into a very active hub of prayer and service for the residents and office workers of Makati.

On August 15, 1977 the parish cornerstone was blessed by the late Cardinal Jaime Sin. The principal sponsors, the Ayalas, Barangay leaders, Mr. Victor Lim, Mr. Melencio and the late Mayor Nemencio Yabut graced the momentous affair of thanksgiving and praise. May of 1978 saw the completion of the parish church, offices and conference halls followed by the funeral parlor in January 1979. The parish became popular mainly for weddings, drawing from Fr. Roozen’s impressive track record of organizing beautiful matrimonial ceremonies in Pope Pius X. (source)

In front of the church is the statue of St. John Bosco with St. Dominic Savio and St. Laura Vicuna.

St. John Bosco

Saint Don Bosco, born Giovanni Melchiorre Bosco, and known in English as John Bosco (August 16 1815 – January 31 1888), was an Italian Catholic priest, educator and recognized pedagogue, who put in practice the dogma of his religion, employing teaching methods based on love rather than punishment. He placed his works under the protection of Francis de Sales; thus his followers styled themselves the Salesian Society. He is the only Saint with the title “Father and Teacher of Youth”. The church’s architecture was designed by Jose Ma. Zaragoza while the statues were made by Eduardo Castrillo.  The simplicity of the altar made it more beautiful and elegant.  Apparently, there will be a wedding that is about to start that my friend and I were just as happy to take some photos of it.  Imagine, we hit to bird with one stone :p

St. John Bosco Parish

Just a side note.  After meeting my friend in front of the church and while pulling out my camera, i just realized that i forgot my battery in the house.  Imagine, how in the world can i shoot without a battery.  I know my friend has a spare one but she did not bring it that day.  After 10 mins of thinking, i decided to go back home and get the battery.  Moral of the story… after charging, immediately put the battery inside the camera bag.

At The Altar

We no longer finished the whole ceremony and went to the church in Magallanes.

so you’re having church photo series; just in time that in 2 weeks it’ll be ash wednesday.
fyi, i and the rest of my family used to join my mom during our growing up years in her devotion to complete 30-church-visita-iglesia just before every holy week. so i somewhat memorized most sidestreets and churches within the metro; although there are more to explore and adore… i like the last photo; you’ve captured the beauty of the altar in its solemnity.

You are right, i believe there are a lot things to explore from visiting the churches here especially those small churches and chapels. It is just amazing how these churches are built and how they have been designed that way.
